Borobudur Temple

Located in Central Java, the Borobudur Temple is a Buddhist temple known to be one of the world’s greatest monuments. It’s a compound composed of several temples, the main one being the Borobudur temple and the two temples Mendut and Pawon. The temple compound was said to have been built around the 8th and 9th centuries AD during the Syailendra Dynasty.

This historical treasure was restored by the Indonesian government and UNESCO that took eight years to finish. You may climb the top of the temple to better explore its architecture more closely. Best to join a guided tour to know the history behind this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Gili Islands

Gili islands are composed of three islands, each with its unique characteristics. Gili Trawangan is where you go if you’re up for lively island nightlife, as it’s recognized as a party island. Aside from being a party paradise, it’s also a haven for many divers as it has diving spots perfect for scuba diving. But if you want solitude, visit Gili Meno, the quietest among the three islands. It’s the best island to relax and have a quiet vacation while enjoying island activities. The last is Gili Air, a mix of the two islands. This sea temple is famous for its sunset views by the cliff. Found in Bali, this temple sits on top of a steep cliff that’s made more magical by its overlooking sea views and the sound of the waves crashing into the cliffs. As one of Bali’s nine key temples, Uluwatu Temple is a spiritual spot that’s believed to protect Bali from evil spirits. Aside from the temple itself, a visit to Uluwatu gives you a glimpse of Indonesian culture through the traditional Kecak dance. You’ll also see monkeys roaming around the temples that are believed to be temple guardians. Stay alert, though, as these monkeys are known to steal tourists’ belongings! When visiting the temple, make sure to wear a sarong and scarf.

Past Indonesia’s national parks and beach destinations lies a land known for its death rituals and ceremonies. Toraja is located in Sulawesi, Indonesia, and is an off-the-beaten-path, making it a destination to discover.

Toraja people believe that after death, the spirit still lingers in the world. That’s why the bodies of their people are kept and preserved by their families at home for years until they can pay for a funeral. When in Torajaland, visit the Lokomata, a rock boulder with square holes where the dead are laid to rest. Another spot to see is the Bori Parinding, a burial site that uses huge stones as graves. You’ll also see open tombs which eerily display skulls and skeletons for the public to see.
