The Honda Civic Type R has been a smash hit since the hot hatchback arrived in the U.S. in 2017. Since its inception, the Civic Type R has undergone a few changes, but Honda completely revised it for the 2023 model year. The new model was officially unveiled a few months ago sans a price tag, but Honda recently revealed that it will have a starting MSRP of $43,990 (including the destination charge).

Does that price sound a little steep for a Honda Civic? We wouldn’t blame you for thinking that, especially since the 2021 model retailed for $38,910. That’s around $5,000 more for the newest version. But what do you get for that extra money?
The 2023 Honda Civic Type R is based on the 11th-generation Civic, which comes with updated looks inside and out. Under the hood, the turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine now puts out 315 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, which is routed to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission.
That’s nine more horsepower and 10 more lb-ft of torque than the last Civic Type R model, making this new version the most powerful ever produced. Other refinements include a more stable chassis with 8% more torsional rigidity and 13% bending rigidity, according to Honda.
It’s also 1.4 inches longer and 1.0-inch wider than its predecessor.

While the 2023 Civic Type R is more expensive than the outgoing model, it’s now on par with a German rival – the 2023 Volkswagen Golf R. That all-wheel drive hot hatchback retails for $45,385 and produces the same power level as the Honda.
However, the new Civic Type R is still pricier than other competitors, including the 2023 Hyundai Elantra N and the 2023 Subaru WRX – both of which cost around $10,000 less.
It’s worth it to note that there’s no saying how much dealerships will be marking up the Civic Type R when it finally starts to roll into their showrooms. As of late, we have seen many used 2019-2021 Civic Type R examples sell for anywhere between $40,000 to $45,000 in the current market.
That being the case, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the 2023 model sell for around $50,000 with dealer markups and add-ons. It’s a shame, but that’s the price you pay when demand is far higher than the supply.

Honda just announced that the 2023 Civic Type will show up at dealerships today. Although, we called a couple of local Colorado Honda dealers who said they don’t have an ETA for the new model.
If anything, the new model rollout and allotments are likely regional. So if you’re looking to get your hands on the new Civic Type R, it would be wise to call your local Honda dealer and find out when it could arrive. Also, you could likely reserve one and put in a deposit for it. Just be aware that there could be a markup on the price.
