2023 Mazda CX-5: 10.25-inch widescreen standard, manual axed

Snapshot

  • 2023 Mazda CX-5 update detailed
  • Widescreen infotainment standard; price-leading manual axed
  • Expected to arrive in Australia in early 2023

The updated 2023 Mazda CX-5 has been detailed ahead of its expected launch early next year.

It is the fifth update for the CX-5 in the past five years, with the last three occurring in the first quarter of 2020, 2021 and 2022 – setting a precedent for a local arrival between January and March.

As expected, the 10.25-inch Mazda Connect infotainment system – currently limited to the GT SP and Akera – is standard across the range, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on most variants.

It replaces the ageing 8-inch MZD Connect system first launched on the previous-generation Mazda 3 in 2013.

Mazda notes Android Auto will be unavailable for vehicles built between November 2022 and March 2023, with a free software update expected from April 2023 to restore the feature.

A dealer document seen by Wheels suggests pricing will increase by $500 across the entire range for model-year 2023.

We’ve reached out to Mazda Australia for official pricing and timing information. This article will be updated when further details become available.

The entry-level Maxx includes a wired-only smartphone mirroring connection, and built-in satellite navigation remains limited to the Maxx Sport and above.

Other changes include two front USB-C ports replacing USB-A connections, LED glovebox illumination for the flagship Akera, and a feature allowing drivers to open the windows from the key fob – but not close it remotely.

A new colour, rhodium white metallic, will replace the current no-cost snowflake white finish for $795 – following a $200 price increase of Mazda’s premium hues earlier this year.

While a hands-free electric tailgate was available on early units of the 2022 CX-5 GT SP and Akera, the kick sensor was removed in mid-2022 due to the semiconductor chip shortage – and this remains the case for model-year 2023.

Meanwhile, the six-speed manual transmission has been discontinued for the entry-level Maxx, with the range opening with the more-popular automatic model for 2023.

It follows the Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson, Mitsubishi Outlander and Nissan X-Trail in losing a price-leading base model. This leaves the Kia Sportage as the last mid-size SUV to offer a manual transmission.
