Chocolate is a failsafe gift, whatever the occasion. But with so many tempting treat boxes out there, how do you know which hamper is going to hit the sweet spot? From all-vegan chocolate selections to budget-friendly stocking fillers starting at £9, there’s something for every chocolate lover this Christmas…
So for those on your list that are particularly tricky to buy for, read on for our expert-rated hampers, hat boxes and treat-stuffed totes.
Best chocolate gifts 2022
How we test chocolate gifts
Our expert panel sampled 22 chocolate hampers from the leading retailers, small independents and artisanal chocolatiers in search of the best chocolate hampers for 2022. Each was scored on the quality of the contents (when it came to chocolate, we were looking for an intoxicating aroma, glossy shine, smooth texture and well-balanced sweetness), with additional consideration given for premium packaging, reliable nationwide delivery and overall giftability.
These are the gifts they’ll be sending this Christmas…
1) Melt Chocolates Dark Chocolate & Vegan Gift Hamper
£69.99
Score: 98/100
Our winning gift is a bumper selection of Melt’s vegan-friendly dark chocolates, all wrapped up in a branded tote. A highlight was the praline assortment, which received one of the highest scores our experts have ever given! The lucky recipient will also enjoy the bittersweet candied orange peel pieces and 70% dark chocolate sea salt bar, receiving eight items in total.
2) Cutter & Squidge Chocolate Lover with Prosecco
£53.50
Score: 94/100
For a more price-friendly alternative, Cutter & Squidge combines top-quality treats with beautiful packaging. From buttery chocolate shortbread to the vegan-friendly chocolate orange truffles, we think there’s something for the whole family here (and the full-size bottle of fizz makes this excellent value).
3) Monty Bojangles Kit-tins
£24.99
Score: 85/100
Monty Bojangles’ sweet and creamy truffles never disappoint, however, for Christmas they’ve been packaged in a set of art deco-style cat tins for the feline fan in your life. The panel would have preferred less packaging (chocolates were individually wrapped) but taste-wise, they’re faultless.
4) Motif Espresso Martini Bar Chocolates
£15.99
Score: 84/100
Forgo the double espresso, for these decadent dark chocolate-covered whole roasted coffee beans instead. The sleek packaging is a treat in itself, and the boozy kick replicates the iconic cocktail perfectly.
5) Prestat Festive Sharing Selection Chocolate Box
£21.95
Score: 81/100
Prestat’s sharing selection of festive truffles is presented in the most beautiful box and contains an interesting array of flavours (think, rich gingerbread truffles coated in feuilletine crumb, floral earl grey tea and caramel snowballs among others). A premium gift, fit for a special couple.
6) Love Cocoa Festive Extravaganza Hamper
£70.00
Score: 81/100
Christmas can be a wasteful time of year, but a Love Cocoa gift goes some way to combat this, with beautiful plastic-free packaging and nine trees planted for every hamper sold.
The contents are every bit as impressive, from the spiced gingerbread truffles to the grown-up dark chocolate with sea salt. Overall, you’ll tuck into five slabs of chocolate, two tubes of truffles, nuts and prosecco, making this a varied and thoughtful gift our testers approved of.
7) Guylian Belgian Classics
£9.00
Score: 81/100
Guylian has recently rebranded with a new 100% recyclable sage green and gold box. Inside, the fairtrade seashell choccies are as delicious as ever, and this box holds a bumper selection. Aside from the original, nostalgic hazelnut flavour, new variations are mixed with fruit, nuts and coffee — so there should be something for everyone.
8) Cartwright and Butler Chocolate and Fizz Hamper
£90.00
Score: 81/100
There’s always someone on the list that’s a bit tricky to buy for. But that’s where this excellent hamper from Cartwright & Butler comes in. The gift sleeve can be personalised, and inside there’s a good all-round offering (including prosecco!) that’s sure to please. Special commendations go to the decadent chocolate waters, triple chocolate chunk biscuits and unique tiramisu almonds.
9) Baileys Hot Chocolate Bombe
£12.99
Score: 80/100
Admittedly, you’ll need to provide your own Baileys to fully enjoy this gift, but the team loved this product regardless. Each pack contains three thick Baileys-flavoured milk chocolate shells, holding marshmallows within. Simply add to hot milk — et voila — decadent hot chocolate (although we’d agree with the suggestion of adding an extra splash of Baileys for full marks). The perfect stocking filler for cosy nights in.
3) Dark Chocolate Tasting Set Letter Box Hamper
£29.95
Score: 80/100
We love the concept behind Letter Box Hamper, which allows you to send beautifully wrapped gourmet gifts to loved ones. They hand pick produce from artisanal British producers, and the dark chocolate tasting set — which contains bars from the likes of Willie’s Cacao and Love Cocoa — might just be our favourite yet. The panel particularly enjoyed the decadent hot chocolate buttons and cacao-dusted cashews, which struck just the right bittersweet balance.
11) Filled Chocolate Bars Gift Set
£24.99
Score: 78/100
Cutter & Squidge caters for every price point, and this savvy set includes four chunky chocolate bars, inspired by the brand’s best-selling cake flavours. Special mentions go to the white chocolate with dried mango and zingy yuzu, and the chocolate squidge, packed with salted caramel sauce and crunchy honeycomb. Delicious!
Brut Champagne and Montezuma’s Truffle Set
£70.00
Score: 79/100
We’ll be honest, our panel didn’t need too much convincing when it came to this champagne and chocolate set (already a winning combination in our eyes); but when the champagne comes courtesy of Laurent-Perrier and the chocs, Montezuma (AKA, moreish blissful bites of ganache-filled goodness), it’s a winning gift whatever the occasion.
6) SELFRIDGES SELECTION Champagne and chocolates gift box
£70.00
Score: 78/100
What better way to celebrate a special occasion, than with a bottle of quality champagne? It’s a seriously special bottle, with all the hallmark flavours of brioche, honey and stone fruit, with bright acidity and lingering bubbles. As for the truffles, well, they’re rich, oh-so creamy and laced with champagne… need we say more?

14) Festive For the Family Collection
£45.00
Score: 78/100
Cover all chocolatey bases with this comprehensive collection, including long-standing favourites such as cute caramel penguins, chocolate orange batons and Christmas pudding-inspired truffles. While the panel enjoyed the selection, you might find larger families end up fighting over the two hot chocolate sachets and single shortbread…
The Chocolate & Fizz Collection
£45.00
Score: 78/100
Hotel chocolat nail the under £50 gift category, combining all the brand’s classics, in one handy hamper. While the above had more of a festive feel, this is a great year-round gift, combining chocolate with a mini bottle of prosecco.
Cocoa-lovers will love the gorgeous ribbon-tied “Everything Mini Selection”, salted caramel chocolate puddles and 70% dark fruit and nut nano slab. Even the truffles have been infused with champagne, while still retaining a rich cacao note to please the purists.
1) The Everything Chocolate Gift Hamper Collection
£35.00
Score: 78/100
Cover all chocolatey bases with this comprehensive selection, including long-standing favourites like the billionaire shortbread selector filled with cookies and hazelnuts, and Hotel Chocolat’s famous patisserie-inspired chocolates. Prefer your sugar fix in liquid form? Opt for the larger hamper, which adds decadent hot chocolate flakes and a cacao-infused tea to the mix.
11) The All Dark Vegan Chocolate Hamper Collection
£35.00
Score: 78/100
Long gone are the days when vegan chocolate would lack the authentic creaminess and chocolate flavour of its dairy predecessors and, to prove it, Hotel Chocolat has compiled a selection of plant-based treats for the dark chocolate lover in your life. Highlights for our panel were the dark chocolate pocket selection – which includes eight elegant bite-sized chocolates – and the gianduja-filled dark and nutty buche.
7) Fortnum & Mason The Christmas Champagne & Chocolate Gift Box
£80.00
Score: 77/100
Tucked inside a gold-embossed eau de nil gift box, the lucky recipient will discover a crisp and refreshing bottle of Fortnum’s blanc de blanc champagne alongside a tray of 32 decadent truffles, which offer a heady hit of champagne and an ever so slightly effervescent texture as they melt on the tongue. Unmistakably luxurious, this is a gift worthy of any extra-special celebration.
8) Champagne & Luxury Chocolate Selection 160g Gift Box
£59.00
Score: 77/100
Coming neck and neck with Fortnum & Mason, our testers felt this champagne and chocolate selection from Harvey Nichols was every bit as decadent. It contains a bottle of its rich premier cru French fizz, and a beautifully presented box of white, milk and dark chocolates to enjoy alongside.
9) Red Wine & Dark Chocolate Gift Box
£36.00
Score: 74/100
Prefer a decadent red over a bottle of fizz? This is the hamper for you. It contains a selection of dark chocolate bars and buttons, all of which are the perfect accompaniment to the big, bold Spanish red included.
10) Cadbury Love Chocolate Basket
£35.00
Score: 72/100
There’s something nostalgic about Cadbury’s chocolate. Whether it’s a box of Milk Tray or a slab of Bournville, it never fails to remind us of our childhood. Recreate that magic, with this hamper, overflowing with the brand’s best bits.
22) Festive Oat M!lk Chocolate Hamper Bag
£45.00
Score: 70/100
Chococo’s new vegan-friendly hamper utilises gluten-free oat powder instead of milk, making it a great alternative dairy-free product. From baubles to buttons, snowmen to Santa, this rich and creamy festive set is sure to put a smile on someone’s face this Christmas. Our experts also appreciated the quality tote bag, which can be used year-round. Just don’t forget the meat-free Christmas main to go with it…
