Nervous about coming up with gift ideas for the coffee lovers in your life? We don’t blame you. Coffee gifts can be tough to pick because a lot of coffee drinkers fall into one of two buckets: They are coffee connoisseurs who know exactly what they are doing and have every detail of their morning routine mapped out, meaning there may not be much they need. Or, they don’t actually care what they’re drinking as long as it’s caffeinated.
Don’t worry. We’ve got the perfect gifts for all of them. For someone in that first group, even if they don’t need a new piece of brewing gear, you can always turn them on to a new great coffee roaster or help class up their mug collection. For someone in the second, there is so much out there that can help them step into the world of better- tasting coffee. For everyone in the middle, whether they’re espresso lovers, year-round iced coffee drinkers, or even pod (coffee) people, we’ve got ideas for them too. So as the season of giving draws nearer, here are the best gifts for coffee lovers.
For the espresso enthusiast…
Our favorite semi-automatic espresso machines
We have tested a lot of espresso makers over the years and have some very strong opinions about what’s good and what isn’t. Breville makes a couple of our favorites: the Barista Express Impress, which comes with a built-in burr grinder and tamping system, and the Bamabino Plus, which is excellent for beginner baristas. If your favorite coffee snob is looking to level up their espresso making, we loved working with the Diletta Mio. It’s a prosumer model—sort of a hybrid between the pro machines you see in coffee shops and home machines—and offers incredibly precise temperature control. It a bit of a splurge and requires some real dialing in, but once you get it, it can make creamy, velvety lattes and cappuccinos.

Breville Barista Express Impress
$900.00, Breville

Breville Bambino Plus
$400.00, Bed Bath & Beyond

Diletta Mio Espresso Machine
$1399.00, Amazon
One thing about a semi-automatic espresso machine is that it’s a big gift, both in terms of cost and in terms of the space it’s going to take up in someone’s house. It’s kind of like those car commercials where a woman just parks an Infiniti with a red bow in the driveway for her husband. “Surprise, hope you want to commit to this sedan for the next decade!” If that’s too much commitment there are a lot of more gifty seeming brewers that we would love to receive. Hong Kong-based Wacaco makes a couple excellent handheld espresso brewers in the Nanopresso (great for camping and travel) and the Picopresso (a higher-end, heavier duty
machine). Flair manual espresso makers look beautiful on a countertop and are a lot of fun to use for someone who likes an espresso shot once in a while.

Want genuinely great espresso on the go or without spending upwards of $1,000 on a machine? This mini tool, which operates via a hand pump, churns out a full-bodied brew that’s better than espresso machines three times its price. Take it camping. Take it to a hotel room. Or, use it to make a shaken iced espresso at home. $70, Amazon. Get it now!

Handmade Espresso Cups
These little gray cups are handmade in Israel and stand out thanks to their black clay rim and delicate sides. We’ve also got some options for the coffee aficionado who loves pops of color or soothing neutral ceramics.

For the caffeinated commuter…
Pipimoka
Another brewer from Wacaco, this may be the single best at-work coffee solution we’ve ever tried. It creates a pressurized brew chamber (kind of like an Aeropress) inside an insulated stainless steel travel mug. You can either do your brew before you leave for work, or fill the brew basket with ground coffee, bring it with you, and just add hot water when you get to the office.

Wacaco Pipamoka Portable Coffee Maker
$50.00, Amazon
Kinto travel tumbler
In our travel coffee mug test, this tumbler by Kinto ranked well thanks to its comfortable handle, leakproof design, and narrow mouth. But if we’re being honest, we also just love that it’s so adorable: In a sea of utilitarian-looking to-go containers, this smooth-edge bottle in cheery shades of mustard and rose really stands out.

Kinto Day Off Tumbler
$38.00, Food52
Yeti Rambler
So many travel mugs are just too big—we don’t need a Big Gulp–size coffee in the morning. The Yeti Rambler is the perfect size with a 10-ounce capacity. Insulated stainless-steel sides keep drinks warm or cool, while an easily removable top means you can easily sip with or without the lid.

YETI Rambler
$50.00, Amazon
Fellow Carter Mug Cup
Fellow makes some of the best looking coffee gear out there, but it also happens to be some of the best period. We’ve found their Carter Mug with Slide Lock lid to be absolutely spill proof insulated enough to keep coffee warm when it’s left in a cold car overnight.

Carter Move Mug + Slide-Lock Lid
$30.00, Fellow
Vssl Grinder
We’re always harping on the need for freshly ground coffee beans whenever and however you brew, and the key to getting those fresh beans away from home is a manual grinder. Vssl’s manual burr grinder is both super compact and incredibly effective.

VSSL JAVA
$160.00, VSSLGear
For the coffee lover who’s in a bean rut…
A coffee subscription or some favorite beans
We’re absolutely spoiled with the number of good coffee subscriptions are out there now. Blends and or single-origin, there’s no reason to have bad beans ever again. Giving someone a subscription will allow them to try beans from excellent regional roaster they might not otherwise have access to. It’ll allow them to try rare coffee beans, like those from Quintal (central and South America) or from Port of Mokha (Yemen). It’s not exactly the same sort of stocking stuffer as a nice bag of beans, but we also love Bean Box’s coffee advent calendar for a new cup every day.

Quintal Coffee Subscription
$20.00, Quintal

12 Mornings of Coffee Advent Calendar
$64.00, Bean Box

Mokha Monthly Subscription
$28.00, Port of Mokha

Trade Coffee Co. Subscription
$16.00, Trade Coffee

Atlas Coffee Club
$60.00, Atlas Coffee Club
For the person who drinks iced coffee year-round…
An Aeropress and a cocktail shaker
Did you catch our digital director Maggie Hoffman’s passionate plea against cold brew as the iced-coffee brewing method of choice? If not, check it out. Maggie’s favorite way to make iced coffee is by shaking espresso with ice in a cocktail shaker. She recommends using the Breville or stovetop Mokapot above, but if you don’t want to spring for those, an Aeropress is, she says, “maybe the best bang-for-your-buck piece of coffee equipment around.” And when you outfit it with a metal filter, you get closer to espresso-style coffee. (And you don’t have to worry about running out of paper filters.)

AeroPress
$30.00, Target

Pressure-Actuated Attachment for AeroPress Coffee Maker
$25.00, Amazon

Cocktail Kingdom Leopold Weighted Shaker
$30.00, Amazon
Cold brew coffee maker
For those of you who are holding fast to iced coffee even in subzero temperatures, cold brew makers from Hario and Takeya also make great gifts. The Hario makes smooth, great-tasting iced coffee drinks, but the Takeya takes the cake if you prefer a strong brew or want to make cold brew concentrate.

Takeya Deluxe Cold-Brew Coffee Maker

Hario Mizudashi Cold-Brew Coffee Pot

Coffee service set
This Faro mug coffee service set from Japanese brand Kinto is beautifully understated. The porcelain and stainless steel collection comes with a stackable pot, a mug, a brewer, and a strainer. Every piece has a double-wall construction and is dishwasher-safe. Plus, everything but the strainer can be used in the microwave.

Kinto Faro Coffee Service Set

Ember coffee mug
This smart ceramic mug keeps your coffee the exact temperature you set it to—a blessing for anyone who sits down to work with a cup then looks up to find that it has gone cold 20 minutes later. The mug is controlled via an app, which also has setting for timing a tea brew.

Ember Coffee 10 oz. Mug
$100.00, Target
Smaller mugs
Earlier this year we wrote about why smaller coffee mugs are better. If you have trouble getting through a whole big mug before your coffee gets cold, the solution is simple—get a smaller mug! Here are a few we love.

$20.00, Etsy

Scandinavian-Style Ceramic Mug (6 Ounces)
$10.00, Etsy

For the coffee klatsch host…
Tin coffee canister
If you take great pride in your selection of coffee beans, you should really feel similarly proud about the way you store them. This minimalist design looks beautiful and keeps whole beans safe from air and light, meaning they’ll stay fresh longer. A beautiful canister will definitely say “I care about my coffee. A lot.” Or to really take things to the next level in terms of preserving freshness, opt for these Fellow containers, which vacuum-seal your beans—meaning more robust flavor for your morning cup of coffee.

Fellow Atmos Vacuum Canisters
$40.00, Amazon

Sowden Tin
$10.00, HAY
For the person who wants it easy…
Epi associate editor Jarrett Melendez (self-identified pour-over enthusiast) didn’t approach testing drip coffee makers with incredibly high expectations, but after spending a couple years doing it, he’s found that there are machines out there that make pots that even people insistent on pour over admit are delicious. They’re also Mr. Coffee-easy to make. If you have a coffee lover in your life who will never be bothered with anything more complicated than filling a water reservoir and pushing a button, any of these machine will instantly improve the coffee they drink.

Café Specialty Drip Coffee Maker

Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV 10-Cup Coffee Maker

Ratio Six Coffee Maker

For the person who wants to get into pour over
Chemex
This is the method of choice for the particularly caffeine-addicted aesthete: This all-glass pour-over method is easy to use and produces a light, gorgeous cup. It’s also good for sustainability minded folks since our favorite reusable CoffeeSock filter fits the vessel perfectly. And if they’re into this brewing method, they’ll also want a sleek gooseneck kettle, which will let them disperse the hot water perfectly over the ground beans and make the coffee “bloom.” The newest model of Fellow’s Studio Edition of the Stagg EKG Pro Electric Kettle comes with presets, not just for standard pour over coffee temperatures, but for teas and brewing at different altitudes as well.

Chemex, 6-Cup
$47.00, Amazon

CoffeeSock Reusable Coffee Filter
$14.00, Amazon

Stagg EKG Pro Electric Kettle, Studio Edition
$225.00, Fellow
Coffee scales
Anyone who says they make good pour over coffee without a scale is either lucky or lying. A gram scale (to weigh both coffee and water) is the key to brewing a consistent cup full of flavor. Oxo makes a great value coffee scale and Acaia makes one that is the gold-standard.

OXO Good Grips Precision Scale With Timer
$56.00, OXO

Acaia White Pearl Laboratory Grade Digital Coffee Scale
$250.00, Amazon
The best coffee grinders
If you have a giftee who has been toughing it out with a blade grinder, it’s time to get him a burr grinder. Again, the good people at Fellow do it as well as anyone with their beautiful Ode grinder, but it can’t grind for espresso. If your loved one is an espresso drinker we love KitchenAid’s burr grinder, which can grind right into a portafilter.

Kitchenaid Burr Coffee Grinder
$200.00, Amazon
Just some other good looking coffee makers
Stainless-steel French press
No list of the best gifts for coffee lovers can be complete without a French press. Aside from having a strong, clean look, this sturdy option has a two-screen system to keep the brew grit-free—a common complaint of coffee made in a French press. The double-wall construction is also good for keeping the contents hot for a long time. Plus, it’s a nice product for doing all sorts of tasks beyond making coffee.

Espro French Press
$150.00, Amazon
The Bariseur
Over-the-top gadget? Certainly. But it actually makes a good cup of coffee. Years ago, the Bariseur was little more than a picture shared around on design blogs, but it has become oh so real—and is easy to order, even on Amazon. Product reviews editor Noah Kaufman got one as a gift for his anniversary and loves waking up to it.

Barisieur Coffee Alarm Clock Coffee Maker
$445.00, Amazon
