5 Rugged Future off-Road SUVs to Wait For

Maybe you should wait to buy your next off-road SUV? There are several super-cool off-road SUVs on the horizon for 2023 and 2024 that are making big off-road adventures a priority. Sure, the new Chevy Blazer EV and the new Genesis GV70 look like amazing new SUVs, but they’re not aimed at those of us who get our thrills on dirt. Instead, we can’t wait to get behind the wheel of these new off-road SUVs from Jeep, Toyota, Hummer, Bollinger, and Mercedes-Benz.

2023 Jeep Avenger EV SUV | Jeep

Jeep continues to push EVs and its hybrid 4xe versions of the Wrangler and Cherokee are showing that it can build off-road capable SUVs. Jeep will reveal its first-ever all-electric SUV, the Avenger, on Oct. 17th. Though it’s targeted at the European market, it should find its way to the U.S. It should have a 250-mile range, and Jeep is promising an advanced interior with tons of space. Since it’s a Jeep, we’re also expecting it to have a formidable four-wheel drive system.

We’re expecting a new 4Runner in 2024

2023 Toyota 4Runner | Toyota

A lot has changed in the last 12 years, but not the Toyota 4Runner. Sure, it’s rugged, looks good, and in TRD versions is nearly unstoppable off road. But, many are expecting the a new 4Runner to debut along with a new Toyota Truck in 2024. We don’t know much about it, but we know that it will have to live up to the 4Runner’s legendary off-road abilities, seat five and maybe seven, as well as be more powerful and more fuel efficient than the current version that uses an ancient 4.0-liter V6.

Hot Cars is expecting the new 4Runner and Tundra to get a new version of the chassis that underpins the new Sequoia.

The Hummer EV SUV follows the Hummer EV truck

The Hummer EV truck can certainly perform some off-road acrobatics. The SUV version should arrive in the spring of 2023 and it should have similar capabilities. The truck can, famously, crab walk with its four-wheel steering system, as well as bound through some of the most technical trails you can toss at it, provided they’re wide enough for this beast. While it’s cool, it will also be expensive, with the debut Hummer EV SUV Edition 1 selling for more than $105,000 when it comes available.

The Bollinger B1 will bring work truck ability to EV SUVs

Bollinger Motors is a startup EV company that intends to build the B1, a giant military-looking, slab-sided SUV. In some ways, the B1 looks like something that you would build in your back shop, with flat sheet metal riveted together and flat glass that looks like it came from a 1950s Land Rover, which is the clear inspiration for the B1. But, this $125,000 SUV comes from a company that already makes all-electric Class 4, 5, and 6 work trucks for fleets and intends to bring that work truck chassis to the consumer market. It’s expected to come to market in 2023 or 2024.

The Mercedes EQG is the new EV G-Wagon

Mercedes G-Wagons have been filling parking lots in Beverly Hills for several years. They’re ultra-premium, four-wheel drive SUVs, that seem to appeal to celebrities as much as off-road purists for their incredible build quality, stout nature, and classic two-box SUV good looks. But, as Mercedes plans for its electric future, even the G-Wagon has to change. The new all-electric EQG is expected to debut next summer, but the company has been teasing us for months with a strange 1970s sci-fi campaign that, while short on specs, is long on funky visuals.
