Margaret River is fast becoming a West Australian mountain bike track hub with thousands of mountain bike enthusiasts hitting the track every year.

In fact, did you know almost 120,000 mountain bikes are purchased every year in Western Australia – with 10% of West Australians owning a mountain bike?

The numbers are quite staggering.

However, there’s no surprise once you get off-road and experience mountain bike riding yourself. So what are you waiting for – load up your bike, jump in the car and take a road trip down south to Margaret River.

1. Wadandi Track mountain bike trail

Location: Cowaramup / Margaret RiverDistance: ~23km
Skill Level: Beginner

Perfect for both mountain biking and bushwalking, the Wadandi Track in Margaret River takes you down a ~23km path from Cowaramup to Witchcliffe, just south of Margaret River. The track includes a combination of farmland and vineyards on what was previously known as the “Rails to Trails” path.

And now for a small slice of history.

The track showcases the heritage of the former Busselton to Flinders Bay Railway which was built back in the 1880s. While most of the rail line was salvaged, you’ll still get a glimpse of the track during your mountain bike hiking adventure.

2. Middle Earth mountain bike track

Location: MetricupDistance: ~23km
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Not only does this Margaret River Mountain Biking Trail have an awesome name, but the Middle Earth track is also full of some great technical components spanning around 23km. Build by two local legends, Rod Lakelin and Pete Battye, the track takes anywhere from 1.5 – 3 hours to complete.

The track includes a range of components which are suitable for intermediate to advanced riders including a few small jumps, log obstacles and rocky terrains.

3. Ten Mile Brook trail loop

Location: Margaret RiverDistance: ~14km
Skill Level: Beginner

The Ten Mile Brook Mountain Bike Trail is a loop that spans just over 14 kilometres out and back. The trail starts close to the Margaret River Town Centre and runs through the karri and jarrah forest – making it a nature lovers dream.

4. Boranup Forest mountain bike trails

Location: BoranupDistance: ~13km of tracks
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate

The mountain bike trails located within the Boranup Forest are perfect for mountain biking enthusiasts seeking a few smaller trails. The trail distances range between 1.5km to 4km and are mostly suitable for beginner to intermediate riders.

5. Dunsborough MTB Skills Development Park

Location: DunsboroughDistance: ~10km of tracks
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate

The Dunsborough and Districts Country Club maintain a spectacular mountain bike trail spanning around the country club. The track is split into 15 sections and includes a wide variety of obstacles and technical components to keep you entertained.

To enter and use the park there is a $5 trail maintenance fee which provides you with 5 days access. Alternatively, you can join the club for $70 per annum which provides unlimited entry for the full year.

It’s worth the low cost in our opinion, with all proceeds going back into the trails.

6. The Pines trail

Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced

The Pines Trail off Carters Road in Margaret River has a range of path options that you can take suitable for all riders from beginners to more advanced mountain bike enthusiasts.

For beginners, start at the north area of the Margaret River mountain bike trail where the tracks tend to be wider and easier to manoeuvre. For more advanced mountain bike riders, head south for more technical and steeper tracks which will test your skill levels.

7. Creek Trails Margaret River

Location: Margaret RiverDistance: ~15km of tracks
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Just over the road south from The Pines Trails, Creek Trails in Margaret River will take approximately 2 hours to complete in its entirety. Suited for intermediate to advanced riders, the challenging Margaret River hiking trail includes some rocky terrains, log rides and bridges.

The track has taken many years to construct and is one of the favourites of local mountain bikers. Travelling through beautiful native bushland, we recommend visiting during the WA wildflower season for some spectacular views.
