After Thailand and Laos, Indonesia is next to launch D92A 2023 Toyota Vios - first with 1.5L engine?

- Indonesia to launch Perodua-developed D92A 2023 Toyota Vios later this week
- First in ASEAN to launch with 1.5L engine – Thailand and Laos models use 1.2L and 1.3L engines respectively
- To be imported from Thailand
Toyota Motor Indonesia will be launching the all-new D92A generation 2023 on Wednesday 12-October, according to a Facebook post by Indonesian publication Kendara.
Unlike the outgoing generation Indonesia-assembled Vios (Karawang plant), this all-new model will be imported from Thailand.
Vios is sold in Thailand as the Yaris Ativ, with a smaller 1.2L engine
Specifications has yet to be announced but it is easy to predict that 2023 Toyota Vios will carryover the outgoing car’s 1.5-litre 2NR-FE Dual VVT-i engine, as that’s a new engine that was only introduced in 2016 (engines typically stay on sale for 10 years / two model lifecycles).
As before, it will be mated to a CVT-type automatic transmission but for Indonesia, a 5-speed manual is likely to be offered on the cheapest variant.
Indonesia could also be the first to launch the D92A 2023 Toyota Vios with a 1.5-litre engine. This might sound odd to local buyers but the Vios isn’t sold everywhere with a 1.5-litre 2NR-FE.
Looks similar to Ativa?
In Thailand, where the model is sold under the Yaris Ativ nameplate, it comes with a smaller 1.2-litre 3NR-VE Dual VVT-iE engine to qualify for lower excise duty under Thailand’s Eco Car programme for low fuel consumption vehicles.
There’s also a 1.5-litre Vios sold there but that’s a reskinned version of the previous generation Vios.
In Laos and Saudi Arabia where the D92A Vios has also been launched, the model is powered by a 1.3-litre 1NR-VE Dual VVT-i engine that also powers our .
So Indonesia’s upcoming 2023 Toyota Vios could be the first for a D92A generation model to come with a 1.5-litre engine.
To recap, the all-new 2023 Toyota Vios is developed under the Daihatsu-nomenclature D92A project code, because the development is lead by Daihatsu, under a Toyota-Daihatsu co-owned internal company called Emerging Market Car Company (EMCC). Malaysian engineers from Perodua contributing to the regional project too as Perodua is now a regional R&D hub for Daihatsu, and by the same extension, part of EMCC too.
However, the Vios will remain exclusively a Toyota-only model, so you can bury any hopes for a cheaper Perodua-badged Vios.
The all-new Vios is underpinned by Daihatsu’s latest DNGA-B platform, which already underpins the , , and
The most important mechanical update to the latest generation Vios is the including of . The outgoing generation Vios’ steering rack could only adjust up/down but not reach. It’s the model’s biggest weakness against the .
