Aldi and Walmart Are Slashing Thanksgiving Prices to Pre-Inflation Rates

It’s no secret that food prices are rising. The increase in food prices is even outpacing 40-year highs in inflation, up more than 11%. The price of butter is up more than 24% and flour has risen nearly 25%, while bread and rice are up around 16%. So, it’s not surprising that the price of this year’s Thanksgiving dinner is worrying American families.

That’s why grocery retailer Aldi introduced its Thanksgiving Price Rewind, offering affordable prices on holiday essentials. The company is winding back the clock to pre-pandemic prices. Throughout November, holiday favorites ranging from appetizers, desserts, sides and beverages, will match 2019 prices for discounts of up to 30%.

Walmart has followed suit and is offering a similar special, calling it “This Year’s Thanksgiving Meal at Last Year’s Price.”

What Thanksgiving Items Will I Save Money on at Aldi?

Think favorites like cornbread stuffing, fresh brown-and-serve rolls, apple pie, brie cheese, prosciutto, wines, mini quiches and macarons to name a few. Shoppers can look for the Thanksgiving Price Rewind icon in their local store for extra savings. Discounts are based on average retail prices at Aldi from November 2019.

“Providing amazing products at the absolute lowest prices is what we’ve always done, and we know right now that’s more important than ever,” said Dave Rinaldo, president of Aldi U.S. With 2,200 stores across 38 states, Aldi is on track to become the third-largest grocery retailer by store count by the end of 2022.

“We expect to welcome tens of millions of customers in our stores this Thanksgiving season, and we want them to know they can count on us,” Rinaldo said. “So why not attempt that additional side dish this year, or invite over a few more friends or family members? You can rest easy knowing ALDI has your back this Thanksgiving, and beyond.”

What Holiday Ingredients Are Discounted at Walmart?

Walmart said it is discounting items all of its holiday meals through Dec. 26. This includes basics like turkey, ham, potatoes and stuffing, and also convenience items like ready-to-heat mac and cheese or freshly made pumpkin pie. Those items will cost no more than they did last November and December. Walmart says its whole turkeys are selling for less than one dollar per pound.

“Saving money is a top priority for our customers right now, so this year, we’re removing inflation on an entire basket containing traditional Thanksgiving items. We made significant investments on top of our everyday low prices so customers can get a traditional Thanksgiving meal at last year’s price at Walmart,” said John Laney, executive vice president of food at Walmart U.S.

Walmart says it’s also expanded its selection of easier-to-manage roasts, like boneless turkey breasts, and its selection of grab-and-go meal options, like ready-to-make sides and freshly baked desserts. The reason why? Gen Z. “We also expect that more Gen Z customers will be first-time turkey buyers this year, and our Gen Z customers like having easy, convenient meal options,” said Laney.
