An Asda shopper announced they are switching supermarkets after a “shocking small shop” that cost them £103. The customer shared a snap of her grocery haul from Asda last week along with “@AldiUK here I come”.

According to a recent study from Which? Aldi is the UK’s cheapest supermarket, with a basket of 48 items including groceries and household essentials costing £75.61. Lidl and Asda were in second and third place with £77.45 and £84.87 totals respectively, while the latter was also named “cheapest traditional supermarket” and “cheapest ‘big trolley’ shop” based on a second price comparison of 149 products.

However, these findings didn’t seem to ring true for Twitter user @EmmaJStrong on recent visit to the supermarket. Posting an image of her grocery shop on the social media platform on Friday October 14, Emma wrote “£103 for this small shop at @asda It’s so shocking. @AldiUK here I come.”

Emma’s comment was followed up with the hashtags “#Asda”, “#ripoff” and “#CostOfLivingCrisis”. Fellow Twitter users were quick to agree with the shopper that there was “nothing” to the £103 shop, with user @kevsalo63 replying “Wow, that’s nothing.”

Another user commented: “But theres nothing is there for that amount of money”. Others also shared their own recent grocery shopping experiences amidst the cost of living crisis.

Paul O’Brien (@PulsingBag), for example, wrote: “Just done a £70 shop for my mum, and once I’d put the things away, absent-mindedly went back to the car for the other two bags I must have forgot. There were no other bags. Awful.”

Twitter user Claire (@mrslyon_78) also wrote in the comments section “We swapped to @AldiUK a few months back as @asda were hiking the prices up on everything! Noticed @AldiUK are slowly upping their prices too? No where near as bad as Asda but still not as cheap as they were!”

This got a reply from original poster Emma, who revealed that she investigated Aldi’s prices after getting home from Asda. She wrote: “I did do a price comparison once I came home with an Aldi shop, with Asda online and it was only £11 cheaper. I would have expected a bigger difference!”

User @mrslyon_78 then responded again with “When we first swapped it was a good £30 a week cheaper but probably only about £10/£15 now. Asdas prices are ridiculous though, things going up by 40/50p each not just a few pence.”

Emma did not post a receipt of her £103 grocery shop at Asda, however, MyLondon independently checked the prices of numerous items pictured on Asda’s website and concluded it could reasonably have totalled that amount. 37 items were identified costing a total of £64.71, while an additional 15 or more products were not able to be identified but could make up the remaining £38.29.
