Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards names best places to eat in London - here's the full list

The UK’s best Asian restaurants and takeaways were revealed at the Asian Restaurant & Takeaways 2022 (ARTA) last Sunday October 2, celebrating the hottest venues and chefs from across the country’s industry – as well as from across the pond. Held at the InterContinental Hotel at The O2-London, the event was hosted by BBC journalist and broadcaster Samantha Simmonds and magician and member of the Magic Circle, Paul Martin.

ARTA’s awards celebrated the best of South Asian cuisine across several national and regional categories, with the top prize of National Champion of Champions was awarded to Ruby in Hertford. My Delhi Indian Streetery in Newcastle upon Tyne won the National Chef of The Year 2022, while Bombay Cuisine in Prestwich, Manchester won the accolade of National Takeaway of The Year 2022, and Tamasha in Las Palmas in Spain was crowned European Restaurant of The Year 2022.

There were also accolades given to individuals, including The Lifetime Achievement Award, which was awarded to Mr Muquim Ahmed, or you might know him as the King of Brick Lane. Muquim has built up a reputation as a renowned British entrepreneur, successful restaurateur and spent over 40 years building a rapidly growing business empire.

London’s regional winners of the Restaurant of the Year included Bengal Tiger, City of London (East London), Bayleaf Restaurant, Whetstone (North London), Indian Room, Balham (South London), and Madhu’s of Mayfair, Mayfair (West London). There were only two winners for the city when it came to the Regional Chef of The Year, splitting the capital into North and South.

The Radjoot in Hampstead took home the North London crown, while Silka Borough Market in Southwark clinched the South’s title. For the city’s Regional Takeaway winners, the accolades went to Safa Indian Restaurant, Highams Parks (East London), Bayleaf Takeaway, Whetstone (North London), and Curry World, Lewisham (South London). There was no West London winner in this category.

Salik Mohammed Munim, Founder of the ARTA Awards, said: “The ARTA Awards 2022 are a celebration and recognition of Britain’s vibrant Asian restaurants, takeaways, and chefs. Since the inception of ARTA, we have clearly seen the phenomenal quality of entrants, and the bar set by each, and every nominee has been increasing each year.

“I am truly blown away by the standards set by the competition and having been privy to exceptional quality and service extended by the nominees, I can confidently assert that Asian culinary industry in Britain is in safe hands. Every nominee and winner should be proud of their work.”

He went onto talk about how the current cost of living crisis has been affecting the hospitality industry. Salik added: “ARTA 2022 is extremely special for us, as it has returned after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. The gathering was emotional and symbolic, as it brought together members of the Asian cuisine industry during an exceptionally difficult and testing time.

“The cost of energy crisis is a real threat to the sector, and many are faced with the prospect of closing doors after having served their local communities and patrons for decades. This has been a back-to-back assault on the sector, which was recently reeling and recovering from the pandemic, and staffing shortages post- Brexit. It was a poignant moment for us all, to be together and extend moral support and well-wishes. I truly wish us all the very best.”
