Expert opinion from Toni Tran

Dairy milk may come from any mammal, but cows, goats, buffalo, and sheep are common producers. Whole cow’s milk contains about 87% water, and the remaining 13% contains protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins (A, D, B12, and B2), and minerals (calcium, potassium, phosphorus). A cup of whole milk has around 150 calories. Processing techniques remove fat to produce lower-fat varieties such as 2% or skim milk. As current studies have suggested, the health benefits of milk may be stronger for fermented milk like yogurt, which plays a role in supporting gut health. Milk has nutrients that can affect blood pressure and bone health, but some of their health-promoting effects may be weakened by the high saturated fat content in whole milk. Research on milk often produces contrary findings. The connection between milk consumption and cardiovascular disease, bone health, and cancers is unclear. Regardless, a high intake of any type of milk can lead to weight gain due to the extra calories.

Milk is a highly nutritious food, given that it is designed to feed babies. The nutrition of milk depends on the type of animal that it comes from, but standard cows milk contains fat, protein, and carbohydrates. It has vitamin A, D, B vitamins, along with calcium, phosphorus, selenium and potassium. Many humans are lactose intolerant or allergic to milk protein, so milk may not be a good choice for these populations, although lactose free options are available.
