‘Don't overdo it!' Cruise guest issued warning over common mistake on holidays

Cruise ships nearly always have a buffet restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. While some guests prefer to dine at a ship’s speciality restaurants, the buffet is always popular.

A new cruise passenger asked experienced passengers to share their advice for cruise holidays.

One guest issued a warning about a common mistake that a lot of travellers make at the ship’s buffet.

They said: “Don’t over do it at breakfast. Lunch and dinner are what I really enjoyed but most days I was not hungry for lunch.”

It’s easy to get overwhelmed at a huge buffet but guests might regret filling up on breakfast if they aren’t hungry for lunch.

However, if guests are going on an excursion and want to save money, it could be a good idea to fill up at breakfast.

A cruise buffet breakfast will often include cooked options, pastries, yoghurts, fruit and cold meats.

Guests could choose to pay for breakfast at a specialty restaurant if they want a lighter option.

While the buffet is usually included in the price of the holiday, guests will need to pay the bill at speciality restaurants.

Royal Caribbean has several specialty restaurants on each of its ships including passenger favourite, Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen.

The restaurant serves pizza, pasta and main dishes including osso bucco and chicken parmigiana.

Prices at specialty restaurants vary with more luxurious venues charging passengers the most.

Some passengers opt for room service while on a cruise although this will often carry an additional charge.

The guest shared another tip saying: “The better you treat the staff, the better they treat you.

“The servers at the pub knew my name by the end of the week and all I did was be appreciative and tipped a little.”

Cruise crew will always appreciate kind and polite passengers as they work so hard to create an excellent guest experience.

They also recommended that guests carry some cash so that they can tip staff at the end of the holiday.

The guest said: “Speaking of tipping, break down bigger bills if you plan to do some tipping.

“I had to go to the service desk and even on day two, it was a wait. Think about baggage handling, etc.”

Although it’s not compulsory, guests can tip their room stewards at the end of the holiday to thank them.

Some guests also leave little thank you notes or gifts for crew that have made a difference on their holiday.
