Explore Hong Kong’s Great Outdoors with Shanty Paredes

With its breathtaking views, wide ranges of culinary options, stunning attractions and an endless array of shopping destinations, Hong Kong is a world-class destination radiating an inescapable charm. For those holding on to the fond memories of exploring Hong Kong, the alluring contrast of concrete jungle with hilly nature is perhaps the one view they would most often miss.

Through the “100 Reasons to Miss Hong Kong” campaign, Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) invites us to relive our heartfelt moments in Hong Kong through exciting virtual events. One of which is #HikingwithShantyinHK, featuring Shanty Paredes – Indonesian celebrity who has lived in Hong Kong for eleven years – as she explores the natural beauty of Sai Kung.

Sai Kung is a part of the Hong Kong peninsula dubbed “Hong Kong’s back garden”. The area earned its lovely epithet through its fishing villages, beautiful nature, hiking trails, beaches, and tranquil atmosphere. Sai Kung is also well-known among visitors for its fresh seafood; the fishermen deliver fresh bounties directly from the boat, creating a unique scene of a bustling floating market.

Shanty’s journey to explore the fishing town begins with a boat ride from Sai Kung Pier; one that connects Sai Kung with the series of small islands within the peninsula. From Sai Kung Pier, Shanty guides her audience on a journey to Yim Tin Tsai, Hap Mun Bay, Hak Shan Teng and Kiu Tsui Beach – all of which are parts of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark.

The journey starts with a 15-minute ferry ride to Yim Tin Tsai. Along the way, the panoramic view of the clear Sai Kung water with its surrounding islands bids you a warm welcome. Being uninhabited, Yim Tin Tsai consistently beckons daytrippers to explore and immerse themselves in the charm of an abandoned island.

A not-to-be-missed landmark on this tiny island is the Chapel of St. Joseph, a historical chapel bearing ancient Roman architectural styles. At the end of the loop trail, freshen up with tasty Hakka sweets before heading back to the pier.

After a refreshing dip at Hap Mun Bay, embark on a hiking route atop Hak Shan Teng hill. The trail boasts a panoramic view of the coastline. Along the way, you’ll also encounter dense rows of trees and thickets, easily mistaken for a naturally-occuring green tunnel! The well-preserved nature is also home to fascinating species of colorful butterflies. The 1-hour trail takes you to the next stop: Kiu Tsui beach.

Kiu Tsui Beach

The most distinct feature of Kiu Tsui is the unique pineapple-shaped rocks lying along the beach. These feisty-looking rocks were formed millions of years ago as a result of ancient volcanic activities from different geological periods taking place around Sharp Island.

When the tide is low, make your way to the small islands by way of tombolo, a sandy piece of land connecting to the nearest islands.
