Every time that I think Spring is finally here, the weather makes it very clear that I’m wrong. But with St. Patrick’s Day and Easter right around the corner, I know that rain or shine, spring will be here soon!
So how do you celebrate spring {and spring holidays} while it’s still too cold out to go soak up the sun? With colorful hot cocoa of course!
We love hot cocoa bombs and enjoy them all winter long. But they’re awesome in spring too, especially those days before it’s really started to thaw and when those April Showers start showing up. But these are colorful hot chocolate bombs, so while they’re great for warming up on a cold day they’re also great for celebrating.
How do you make hot cocoa bombs for holidays?
These hot cocoa bombs can be used as-is for the variety of colorful holidays in spring, including Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day, and Easter. Or if you want to get even more on theme, swap out the sprinkles for some holiday themed ones or stick to drizzling with themed colors- the options are limitless! In fact, you could totally save this for next fall and make some awesome Halloween cocoa bombs the same way!
Should You Make or Buy Hot Cocoa Bombs?
Not sure if it’s worth making these or just buying them from the store? I hear ya and honestly there’s no right or wrong answer. In fact, I do both! Here are some things to factor in when deciding:
- It does cost a few dollars to buy the mold for the hot cocoa bombs, but it’s washable and you can reuse it for years. You will also have to buy the ingredients up front, but you can make way, WAY more hot chocolate bombs for the same price as a few pre-made ones.
- If you’re short on time, store bought hot cocoa bombs are a quick treat without the time or the dishes. Alternatively, you can make a whole batch of them when you do have a little extra spare time, and then store them to use whenever you want. {If you’re thinking about doing this, don’t miss my number one tip for storing hot cocoa bombs here.}
- You can find exactly what you want if you make them yourself- customize them with your favorite colors, type of chocolate, and sprinkles for unlimited options.
- It’s an awesome activity to do with your kids, depending on their age.
- These also make great gifts that are thoughtful without costing a lot of money!
Can the Kids Help?
Kids can ALWAYS help in the kitchen! For this recipe, I’d suggest letting them help with:
- Stirring the white chocolate chips
- Adding the cocoa mix and sprinkles to the inside of the hot chocolate bombs
- Drizzling the colorful chocolate over the completed hot cocoa bombs
I’d also suggest that you help a little extra with the chocolate chips when they’re melted as they can get really hot. Depending on your child’s age it may also be frustrating for them trying to assemble the cocoa bombs so if your kids are young you’ll want to do that part, too.

These colorful hot cocoa bombs are perfect for welcoming spring, celebrating Easter, or even enjoying for St. Patrick’s Day! Easily customize or create as-is for a great spring treat.
Ingredients
- 1 12-ounce package white chocolate chips
- 1 packet instant cocoa mix
- 1 cup mini marshmallows
- ¼ cup pink melting chocolate
- ¼ cup green melting chocolate
- ¼ cup colorful sprinkles
- 6 cups hot milk to make the bombs
Instructions
- Place the white chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl and microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring between each interval, until the chocolate chips are fully melted.
- Put a spoonful of melted chocolate inside one cup on the silicone mold and use the back of the spoon to spread the chocolate up the sides of the mold. Continue this process until all the molds are coated.
- Set the remaining chocolate aside for sealing and decorating the bombs.
- Allow the chocolate to set completely, around 2 to 3 hours. You can speed up the process by placing the chocolate in the refrigerator.
- When the chocolate is set, remove each of the chocolate pieces from the mold. Add a small amount of instant hot cocoa mix to half the pieces and top the hot cocoa mix with marshmallows and half the sprinkles.
- Reheat the chocolate in 15 second intervals until melted. Pick up an empty chocolate piece and dip the edges into the melted chocolate. Carefully place it on top of a filled piece and lightly press it into place. Use your finger to smooth melted chocolate around the seam. Continue until all the chocolate bombs are sealed.
- Melt the pink and green chocolate according to the package instructions, then place the melted chocolate into piping bags. Drizzle the chocolate over the top of the bombs to decorate. Sprinkle remaining sprinkles over the top of the bombs.
Allow the chocolate decorations to set before using, around 1 hour.
