Liam Lawson will be back in the cockpit of AlphaTauri’s Formula 1 car this weekend, taking part in the opening practice session of the weekend.

Lawson will drive Yuki Tsunoda’s car for the session, fulfilling the second of two mandatory rookie outings that are in play this year.

The New Zealander was in the car in Belgium earlier this year during FP1, standing in for Pierre Gasly on that occasion.

He tallied 14 laps during the session, ending it in 19th place.

Lawson is currently racing full-time in the FIA Formula 2 Championship, and currently sits 9th in the Drivers’ Championship ahead of the final round in Abu Dhabi next month.

He has taken three victories this year with Carlin, and was also promoted to the role of Red Bull’s reserve driver in 2022, replacing Juri Vips.

Other junior drivers that will take part in the FP1 session from Mexico include Pietro Fittipaldi at Haas, Logan Sargeant at Williams and Jack Doohan for Alpine.
