Ford just dropped the mic. For a few weeks Ford has been coy with how much power its new Super Duty truck will have. Now we know, and it’s massive: 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. That’s not just stump-pulling power, but Boeing 747-pulling power for this big truck. What did Ford do to its new, but old-school, 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 diesel?
What does Ford Super Duty mean?
Ford F-350 Limited | Ford
With the new 2023 Ford Super Duty on the way, Ford is upping the ante on what Super Duty really means. In Ford speak, Super Duty means the workhorse pickups, the ones that can tow and haul the most. Super Duty trucks usually come badged as F-250 or F-350 and F-450, and are longer, taller, and wider than most full-size pickups. They compete with the Silverado HD and the Ram HD 2500 and 3500 trucks.

With the updates to the Power Stroke, that means the new truck has a maximum towing capacity of 40,000 pounds. That’s about the weight of a garbage truck or a large fire truck. A 2023 Super Duty can also now haul 8,000 pounds in the bed, which is as much as a Chevy Tahoe SUV and a Prius C. Together.
Of course, to get that kind of power you’ll have to order the F-450 truck in the regular cab variant and equip it properly. Though these kinds of numbers make headlines, keep in mind that in most states you’ll need a commercial driver’s license to tow more than 10,000 pounds. For comparison, according to Jalopnik, the Ram 3500 HD maxes out at 37,050 pounds, while the Silverado 3500 can tow 36,000 pounds.
How much power does the 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel make?
The newest version of the High Output 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel makes 1,200 lb-ft of torque and 500 horsepower. But that’s not all the news from Ford, the new 7.3-liter gasoline V8 engine available in the F-350 now makes 430 horsepower and 485 lb-ft of torque. The regular (non-High Output) 6.7-liter Power Stroke makes the same power, at 475 horsepower but 1,050 lb-ft of torque.

The new Super Duty trucks were announced in September and bring a lot of new tech to the big truck segment. It’s the first truck with 5G capability, and it has Pro Power Onboard, which provides electric power from its hybrid motor. The new truck has 2 kW of electric power. It has new onboard scales, as well as new box steps in the bed, and active cameras.
The new seats, too, can fold almost completely flat. Its new tailgate is automatic, and it has two cameras to itself, on top of the 12 others on the rest of the truck. The new truck gets a heads-up display, too, to show speed and other vital info. But, when you’re in the off-road mode you can now see all around the truck. The new Pro Trailer Hitch Assist will automatically back the truck up to a trailer. It then uses the onboard scales to measure tongue weight so you’re trailer is balanced.
Ford created the Super Duty line in 1999 and they have gone through four generations. The current generation launched in 2017 and was the first all-new version of the truck since 1999. Like the F-150, the Super Duty got an aluminum frame that saved hundreds of pounds of weight, which not only helped the trucks get better fuel economy but allowed them to tow and haul more.
For 2022, you can order it with a 6.2-liter V8 that has 385 horsepower, a 7.3-liter with 475 horsepower, or the 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 diesel that makes an astounding 1,050 lb.-ft of torque and 475 horsepower.
