The mum said: “If you have a coffee-stained mug like this it’s easier to clean than you might think.

“All you need is some baking soda and hot water. Add your water to form a paste and then use an abrasive scrub and you’re done.”

Cleaning mug with baking soda

Baking soda, also known as bicarbonate of soda, is often hailed for its multipurpose cleaning uses around the home thanks to its mineral structure, which works as a light abrasive to scrub away stubborn stains without leaving harsh scratches.

The alkaline nature of baking soda also dissolves organic compounds like dirt and grease.

The hack went down a storm with commenters, who shared their experience testing the method on their own mugs at home.

Fellow TikTok mum, Wimberly, said: “Baking soda is the best!” Another user named Jenine described the hack as a “great idea.”

How to clean stained mugs using white vinegar

However, baking soda isn’t the only natural, kitchen cupboard ingredient which can help to combat coffee stains in mugs.

Cleaning experts from Molly Maid also recommend using white vinegar. White vinegar is great for cleaning due to its acidic nature.

To clean your mug, fill it half full with boiling or very hot water from the kettle. Then, top off the mug with white vinegar.

Allow the mixture to soak for a while, this may take longer for heavily stained mugs.

Next, pour the vinegar water down the sink and scrub the freshly emptied mug with an abrasive sponge. Finally, rinse your mug with fresh, clean water for sparkling results.

How to clean stained mugs using salt and ice

If you don’t happen to have baking soda or white vinegar to hand, Molly Maid’s cleaning team say salt and ice could also do the trick.

To begin, pour some salt into the bottom of the mug and dump a few pieces of crushed ice on top.

Cover the mug with a few layers of plastic wrap and shake vigorously. The coarse salt removes the coffee stains without any chemicals.

Rinse with clean water, and your mug is restored to its former glory.
