The celebrity chef shared that she starts by mixing plenty of sugar with a couple of sticks of butter and some cinnamon. Drummond then mashes all of this together until she has a beautifully blended spread.
She also adds a secret ingredient to this mix: Mexican vanilla extract. But before you rush out in search of this flavoring, HealthDay reports the F.D.A. has warned consumers to beware of bargain Mexican vanilla made from the extract of tonka tree beans. It contains a substance that has been banned from food in the U.S. since 1940 called coumarin because it can cause some serious health concerns. If you use Mexican vanilla for your cinnamon toast, make certain it’s the real deal made with vanilla bean.
After Drummond spreads her cinnamon sugar butter spread onto her bread, she pops it into the oven and lets it bake for 10 minutes so the butter doesn’t melt too quickly, which she says will make the bread soggy. She then finishes it off under the broiler to golden perfection. Drummond’s final pro tip: experiment with different breads, such as a thick French bread, when you make your cinnamon toast.
