Vehicle sales for the month of September 2022 remained stagnant against the previous month with a mere 1.5 per cent climb. However, it still represented a monumental bump up when laid out against the same 9-month period in 2021.

September 2022 sales figures came in at 67,659 units, a negligible 1.5 per cent extra over the 66,614 units registered in August 2022.

Nonetheless, figures by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) lays out a massive 53 per cent rise over September 2021 numbers that checked in at 44,227 units.

Again, it’s a huge 62 per cent jump in numbers for the year-to-date (YTD) sales with 516,798 units registered for the first 9 months of the year against the 318,827 units that was sold during the first 9 months of 2021.

It appears that registrations are beginning to plateau with carmakers rushing to fulfil deliveries of bookings from the SST-exemption period with production numbers a pinch over sales.

In line with the registrations, a total of 69,389 units rolled out of local factories, corresponding with the sales and indicating that production numbers might be near peak capacity.

Similarly, the MAA predicts that carmakers will continue churning out vehicles with a goal of fulfilling bookings received prior to 30 June 2022 and with production capacity nearing its limit, sales figures for October 2022 will likely not stray much from September’s digits.

Ultimately, production rests firmly on the supply of parts and chips that remains short.
