The 4 Most Reliable Used Crossover SUVs—According to J.D. Power

Certain used SUVs can offer a ton more value than a brand-new vehicle. But the last thing you need is for your used SUV or crossover to leave you with an expensive repair bill–or even to leave you stranded. Luckily, J.D. Power gives every brand-new SUV a predicted reliability score. U.S. News dug through the past five years of these ratings–and its reviews of the same vehicles–to rank your best options for a reliable used crossover SUV. Here are the top four:

  • 4th – 2017 Chevrolet Equinox
  • 3rd – 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe
  • 2nd – 2018 Hyundai Tucson
  • 1st – 2019 Kia Sportage

2017 Chevrolet Equinox

Chevrolet Equinox | General Motors

Chevrolet built its five-seat Equinox crossover to be comfortable, capable, and very affordable. U.S. News warns that the result might handle and accelerate like a budget vehicle, especially when equipped with the underpowered I4 engine instead of the V6. But it offers a ton of features at its price point. These include a Wi-Fi hotspot, a 7-inch screen, and driver aid software on upper trim Equinoxes. Overall it earned a 7.8/10 when new.

When it comes to reliability, the Equinox crossover SUV has few peers. The 2017 model year is especially compelling because J.D. Power awarded it an 89/100 predicted reliability score. But at the same time, it is the last year of its generation; because it must compete with more modern-looking used Equinoxes, it is depreciating quickly. This may be why the average reliable used 2017 Equinox crossover SUV changes hands for $18,322-$24,988.

2019 Hyundai Santa Fe

2019 Hyundai Santa Fe | Hyundai

The regular 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe had five seats. But you can also opt for a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL with a small third row of seating. It might be a bit cramped for three rows of adults, but makes a great way to haul around the kids. Every 2019 Santa Fe comes with at least a 7-inch screen and connects to your smartphone. It will also have adaptive cruise control and even driver drowsiness monitoring. Despite a weak base engine, U.S. News rated this SUV an 8.4/10.

The 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe handles relatively well for its size. Its drivetrain is also well sorted, earning it an 89/100 predicted reliability score from J.D. Power. With all of its features and upgrade options, it’s unsurprising that this reliable crossover fetches an average of $26,349-$37,558 on the used SUV market.

Here’s our impression of the latest Hyundai Santa Fe.

2018 Hyundai Tucson

Hyundai Tucson | Hyundai

While Hyundai’s Tucson is as reliable as the Santa Fe crossover SUV, it features slightly fewer standard features but comes in at a lower used price. Firstly, every Tucson only fits five passengers. That said, it offers excellent second-row room. Its standard touchscreen is just five inches, and Apple Carplay/Android Auto was reserved for higher trims. Driver aid software was exclusive to the Limited trim. Overall, U.S. News gave it an 8.3/10.

The 2018 Hyundai Tucson earned an impressive 90/100 predicted reliability score from J.D. Power. That said, its base engine is a bit underpowered. If you do much highway driving, look for the turbocharged I4 instead. The average used 2018 Hyundai Tucson goes for an inviting $21,850-$28,806.

2019 Kia Sportage | Kia

For example, an Kia Sportage EX trim comes with a 7-inch touchscreen loaded with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, features heated leather seats, automatic climate control, and even safety features like blind spot monitoring/rear cross traffic alerts.

The Kia Sportage received an incredible 91/100 predicted reliability score from J.D. Power. Note that if you want the 240-horsepower turbocharged I4, you’ll have to hunt down a Kia Sportage SX Turbo trim. An average, used 2019 Kia Sportage goes for a tidy $23,420-$30,713.
