The 5 Cheapest Electric SUVs and Crossovers You Can Buy Today, and One That’s Coming

The cheapest electric SUVs aren’t that cheap, but they are good and getting better. From about $26,000 you can now buy an electric crossover that significantly cuts down on compromises with a good range, and a comfortable interior. While we’re still waiting for prices to come down on electric SUVS, these five that you can buy now, and one that could be coming soon, could make a lot of sense.

The Bolt EV starts at $25,600 (plus a $995 destination fee) which makes it the cheapest crossover you can buy today. Sure, it’s small, but it’s an economy crossover that’s designed to be cheap to buy and operate. But, it’s not a penalty box; it comes with all the options you’d need, like a 10.2-inch touchscreen with the Chevy Infotainment 3 System, as well as nice cloth seats and a surprisingly-generous 36 inches of rear-seat legroom.

The Bolt EV has a range of 259 miles on a full charge. It can hold 57 cubic feet of luggage in the back.

Chevrolet Bolt EUV got a huge price drop for 2023

The Chevy Bolt EUV is similar to the EV, but it’s not the same. The EUV is larger and starts at $27,200 for 2023, while the 2022 was $33,500.  The EUV was all new in 2022, but for 2023 you can get it in new trims, including a sportier Redline Edition. But mostly, it’s the same 200-horsepower crossover as the EV, but with a three-inch-longer wheelbase.

Because it’s essentially the same, but larger, than the EV it has slightly less range, at 247 miles. Strangely, it holds less with the seats folded than the EV, with 56.9 cubic feet of space in the back.

Theall new VW ID.4 brings a dose of flash and style for $38,790. We’ve been teased for what seems like years by VW with the ID.4 (and the new electric bus), and we’re finally starting to see the ID.4 on the road. The base rear-wheel-drive ID.4 has 201 horsepower and a 208-mile range. While that’s not a lot, it does come with DC fast charging. The ID.4 also comes with an interesting light bar on the dash that alerts you to incoming calls or warnings, as well as VW’s IQ.DRVIE, which is the company’s suite of safety features.

The ID.4 has 64.2 cubic feet of cargo room when the seats are folded. All-wheel drive and a larger battery pack can be added.

The 2022 Hyundai Kona, on price, range, and power, was spot on with the 2022 Bolt EUV. But, at $34,000, it’s harder to justify the Kona Electric today. But it is a larger SUV that doesn’t look like a puffed-up tiny crossover. This SUV has a 258-mile range from its 201-horsepower electric powertrain. It comes with an 8-inch touchscreen, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Kona comes in base SEL trim, or the Limited for $42,500 which adds a larger touchscreen, navigation, heated seats and steering wheel, as well as leather trim. And, as a bonus, it keeps its range estimates even in the cold, according to InsideEVs.

For the nearly $40,000 price of the Kia Niro EV you can get a nice Lexus. But, of course, no Lexus has a 253-mile EV range for $40,000. The Niro comes with a lot of great features, like wireless charging and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. But what really makes this EV stand out is the stylish interior that gives it a premium feel inside. Kia redesigned the Niro for 2023, and it certainly stands out with new side blades over the rear wheels that are painted in a contrasting color from the rest of the body.

It comes with a 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty on its battery and powertrain.

Sono Sion SUV | Sono Motors

German company Sono Motors is prepping to sell the new Sion electric car that can self-charge via solar panels on the body. The company is now taking orders for the Sion and says it has received more than 42,000 reservations. And, yes, the company says it should start at $25,000 and seat five in comfort. The company plans to start production of the Sion in Finland in the second half of 2023. It aims to produce 275,000 Sions in the next seven years.

The Sono isn’t pretty or fast, but it could be cheap and easy to live with since you don’t need to find a charger; you just leave it in the sun. It has a 190-mile range, but that increases if you leave it in the sun.
