We’re just going to say it outright: We’re not huge fans of traditional air fryers (more on that below). But you’re looking for the best Prime Day air fryer deals 2022 has to offer, so we’ll deliver. At Epicurious, we’ve long been skeptical about air fryers. There’s no such thing, technically, as an air fryer. The name is just really good marketing. Really, “air frying” is just convection cooking. And actually, we’re huge fans of convection cooking. When fans circulate hot air in your oven, food does, in fact, get crispier. It also cooks faster. Air fryers in their best form are essentially just countertop convection ovens—and that’s a great thing. Mini convection ovens heat up so fast, increase the amount of available oven space you have, and make small-batch weeknight cooking a cinch. We just recommend that you opt for a countertop oven that can “air fry” as opposed to a traditional “air fryer” that looks like an egg and has a pull-out basket. That’s because the actual ovens offer more space—and with more space, your food can spread out and not get piled on top of each other, therefore ensuring that it actually gets crispy.

But let’s get something straight: You are not frying anything in an air fryer—and therefore you shouldn’t expect your food to taste fried. It’s true that convection ovens, which circulate hot air within the chamber of your oven, cook foods faster and more evenly than ovens that do not have convection capabilities. It’s also true that this air circulation can make crispy-skinned chicken wings, chicken thighs, potatoes, and even tofu. It is not true that it gives you the full deep-fry experience you’d get if you dredged chicken in flour and cooked it in hot oil (as much as we would like to avoid the deep frying clean up.)

So, free yourself of the name! When you begin to think of the air fryer as simply a little oven convection oven (and manage any expectations you might have about it producing “healthy” versions of fried food), it becomes a useful tool. It is actually used by professional bakers to make small batches of cookies or brownies and we’ve talked to a cookbook author who thinks that air fryers are a superior tool for cooking crispy roasted vegetables.

If you routinely cook dinner for one or two and want to avoid turning on your oven to save energy (or to keep your kitchen cool in the summer), an air fryer is the perfect kitchen gadget for you. If you have an unreliable oven in a rental home? The best air fryer is a good work-around.

Ninja Air Fryers

Ninja products don’t always shine during our product testing, but in our air fryer review and buying guide, our product reviewers found the Ninja AF101 digital air fryer to be the best bang-for-your-buck air fryer, meaning it’s a great Amazon Prime Day air fryer deal to snatch. It has a 4-quart capacity, straightforward design, and gave a batch of sweet potato fries an “admirably crusty exterior.” It’s currently $50 off its original price at Amazon. (If you’re a fan of Ninja kitchen appliances, there’s a whole host of Ninja Prime Day deals on Amazon.) The Ninja Foodi 9-in-1 is essentially a larger version of the AF101 air fryer (in fact, it sort of looks like two of those machines crammed together). However, we were less impressed with it than its smaller counterpart. Because it has the two chambers, it claims to be able to cook two different foods at different temperatures at the same time—and it handled that task just fine in our test. However, it also claims that it can handle up to two pounds of tater tots and fries, but in our testing we got unevenly cooked, simultaneously soggy and burnt results when we tried to cook that many tots. It performs fine with smaller batches, but has some limitations. We haven’t tested the Ninja Foodi 12-in-1 but because it’s an eight quart air fryer we’d think it would fix some of the issues we had with the smaller Foodi 9-in-1. We think the AF101 is better bang for your buck, however, if you like the idea of the dual temperatures, go for the Foodi.

Instant Pot Air Fryers

Instant Pots are not just Instant Pots any longer (actually, they haven’t been for some time). Instant makes a whole range of different models of air fryer. And while the Prime Day deals on the top-of-the-line Instant Pot Omni Plus came and went, there are still bargains on Instant Pot Vortex models. And the Instant Pot Vortex plus offers a number of the same features and cooking functions as the Omni Plus (though not all), like a digital touchscreen, a rotisserie, a dehydrator. It’s also much smaller and much less expensive. The Vortex is just an air fryer, not an oven, but it’s got an even smaller footprint than the Vortex Plus, so if you’re tight on space it’s still a good choice. smaller footprint.

As far as we’re concerned, the best Prime Day deals are on the winners of our product tests, like the Phillips Premium Air Fryer, which has come out on top two years running. While we think it’s worth buying even when it’s at (its quite high) full price, it becomes more of a must-have when it’s discounted a full $100. It’s still one of the higher-priced air fryers on this list, but sometimes you really do get what you pay for.

What’s so great about this particular air fryer? Well, first of all, it’s bigger than other models. One frustration with air fryers is that, in general, they have incredibly small cooking chambers: this means that, if you’re trying to make French fries for the whole family, some come out limp and floppy and others are extra crispy, to the point of being nearly burnt, because the air can’t circulate as well. Not so with the Phillips, which cooked a huge batch of fries to golden, crunchy perfection. It’s also great at reheating children’s chicken fingers and roasting crispy chickpeas and veggies, among other things.

The machine also has an easy-to-use digital interface, preheats fast, and comes with a useful cooking manual that has spot on cooking times and temperatures for various air-fried favorites. This’ll take up some real estate on your countertop, but we think it’s absolutely worth it.

It’s a great air fryer to buy if you’re curious about the trend and want to try your hand at homemade french fries without getting out an actual deep fryer.

Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro

Here’s another air fryer toaster oven from one of our favorite appliance brands. Breville Smart Ovens are nice, not only because they have a beautiful stainless steel finish, but also because they are equipped with high-tech features. The Element IQ sensors detect what you’re cooking and adjust heat according to avoid burning food. The controls are nice, with knobs for adjusting time and temperature range, and several presets, including warm, broil, bake, dehydrate and more. This oven also has a two-speed convection fan, also called “super convection” capability. This means fast and even heat distribution.
