Whether you’re kitting out your student digs, buying your first house or have just caught the cooking bug, stepping into the world of food can be daunting. And I say this hailing from a family of chefs, years of culinary training and working in food. Even I felt the pressure on what to have in my kit and found the food scene a little intimidating at times.
One thing I worked out was that you don’t need to break the bank to build your kitchen, you don’t need a £100 pan when you start out. Just get what you can afford and have fun making food you enjoy. That’s what cooking is about!
My family and friends have bought me every kitchen gadget you can imagine over the years. But only from experience have I found my favourite, bare essentials. I use these items on a daily basis and they have multiple uses.
My hope is that this list provides you with easy, fun and reassuring cooking experiences. That doesn’t break the bank either! And may you find your inner Gordon Ramsey, or Jamie – whatever works.
Chef’s Knife
£15.74
If there’s a knife l use on a daily basis, it’s this one. Whether I’m chopping herbs, slicing raw chicken or making a salad, this is my most used knife. If you’re scared of using big knives, I’d recommend you start here.
With its large sturdy handle and pointed blade it provides control and accuracy. The curved shape is designed to rock on the board to help you chop quickly and smoothly.
If you want to practice some pro chopping skills, why not practice on celery stalks or carrots. Just please keep your fingers out the way.
Pairing Knife
£4.62
A paring knife may be small but it does mighty work in the kitchen. Perfect for those little jobs like chopping fruit, slicing pastry or even a peeler for the brave. This one is perfect for those little jobs in the kitchen when you need some precision.
Vegetable Peeler
£6.49
This may seem obvious, but a good peeler should last a lifetime and its job doesn’t stop at peeling your spuds. Why not try shredding cabbage, making cucumber ribbons for your G&T or shave parmesan over yummy pasta. They really are the gift that keeps on giving.
Angled Blade Palette Knife
£3.80
In life you shouldn’t have favourites, but I’d say this one is up there when it comes to the top of the tops of kitchen tools.
You can use this fella for all sorts, whether you’re smoothing over icing on cupcakes or flipping meat in a pan. Its an essential and worth grabbing for a couple of pounds.
Heat Resistant Spatulas
£6.89
Even if you’re a complete novice in the kitchen, using a rubber spatula to make scrambled eggs or mix your mash potatoes you’ll feel like Mr Ramsay in no time.
The flat pointed edges are perfect to catch all the edges of a pan, ensuring nothing burns and no flour gets left behind. Make sure to grab a heat resistant one and wooden spoons will be a thing of the past.
Meat Thermometer
£9.99
If you’re the kind of chef that overcooks meat out of fear, you must pop one of these in your basket. Never will you worry again if your sausages aren’t cooked or your roast chicken is still raw. Simply pop the probe in, check the temp and enjoy! And when you get to be a super kitchen pro, you can use this to make honeycomb or check the centre of your beef wellington is to your liking.
Mobile Phone Timer
Now I know this might seem obvious, but timing is key when you’re cooking. When you’ve got 6 things cooking at the same time make sure to lean on your trusty friend the timer to keep things in check. Even if you’re not working in a professional kitchen, the door might go, your friend might call and what do you know – the chicken is burnt and dinner is wrecked!
Non Stick Sauce Pan
£8.49
A decent saucepan part of a kit to get the cooking ball rolling in the kitchen. A medium sized saucepan will get you going for the best of recipes. Whether you want to boil some pasta or get fancy with a bechamel sauce. This will have you covered.
Nonstick Frying Pan
£16.99
A non-stick, ovenproof frypan is most versatile and means you’ll be able to knock up one-pot wonders and reduce on that pesky washing up.
Baking Trays
£8.99
Having a few strong baking trays in your box of tricks is another essential. We all know you can pick them up for a pound, but having a sturdy one that won’t peel and warp will set you up for baking the perfect scones, to getting crispy, perfect roast potatoes.
