The "Pretty Woman" cast, then and now

Hector Elizondo, today

Three decades after it was released in theatres, Pretty Woman made a comeback, this time on the stage as a musical. It’s the perfect opportunity to see what’s become of the actors who made the original movie such a hit.

Julia Roberts (Vivian Ward)

It may be hard to believe, but Julia Roberts wasn’t the producers’ first pick for the role of Vivian. In fact, they thought of almost every Hollywood star—except her. They called A-listers, like Michelle Pfeiffer, Molly Ringwald, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Daryl Hannah, Diane Lane, and Meg Ryan, before choosing Julia Roberts. The role of Vivian Ward catapulted Julia Roberts, who was just 22 at the time, into stardom and earned her an Oscar nomination and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical.

Julia Roberts, today

Julia Roberts received $300,000 for her role in Pretty Woman, but by 2000, she’d become the first female actor to earn $20 million, this time for her role in the movie Erin Brockovich. Roberts went on to star in The Pelican Brief, My Best Friend’s Wedding, and Notting Hill. Most recently, she appeared in a season of the series Homecoming.

Richard Gere (Edward Lewis)

Let’s be honest. For much of the film, the most captivating thing about Richard Gere’s character is that he can afford to pay Vivian for a week of her “services.” Luckily, being around Vivian encourages Edward to reveal a little more about himself. When he landed the role of Edward, Richard Gere’s career was in turmoil. His movies King David and Power had been panned by audiences and critics alike. Pretty Woman helped revive his career and earned him a nomination for Best Actor at the Golden Globes.

Richard Gere, today

After Pretty Woman, Richard Gere starred in one to three films a year, including Chicago, Primal Fear, and I’m Not There. The actor, who’s now 72, maintained this pace until 2019.

Kit may have squandered the rent money for their shared apartment, but Vivian doesn’t hold a grudge against her. When she returns from her paid week with Edward, she even gives Kit some of her money to encourage her to go back to school. The role of Kit was played by Laura San Giacomo, who had previously appeared in Steven Soderbergh’s Sex, Lies, and Videotape.

Laura San Giacomo, today

If you’ve seen Laura San Giacomo in anything since Pretty Woman, it was probably on the small screen. Shortly after the movie came out, she starred in the sitcom Just Shoot Me! for six seasons. She also appeared in NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy, and Animal Kingdom, to name a few.

Jason Alexander (Philip Stuckey)

It’s a little hard to watch Jason Alexander play the role of a lawyer who says nothing but serious things in each of his scenes. It’s even harder to see him turn into a rapist by the end of the movie. He still looks like the bumbling George Costanza you’d see every week in Seinfeld.

Jason Alexander, today

After Pretty Woman, Alexander continued to star in Seinfeld until 1998. Although playing George has remained the biggest role of his career, fans could nevertheless hear his voice in The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Return of Jafar and see him on the small screen in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Young Sheldon.

Hector Elizondo (Barnard Thompson)

An experienced actor, Elizondo had over 60 films and TV shows to his name before playing the role of the hotel manager who takes a shine to Vivian and lends her a helping hand.

Hector Elizondo, today

Elizondo has more than 150 roles and appearances on TV and in film under his belt, from Beverly Hills Cop III to The Princess Diaries 2. Although Elizondo is now 85 years old, fans can still catch him in the series Last Man Standing, with Tim Allen, in which he plays the character of Ed Alzate. Elizondo, a good friend of director Garry Marshall, starred in all 18 of his films.

Alex Hyde-White (David Morse)

The young heir to the company Edward is trying to buy also happens to be a polo player. Is that how he learned to be so tough in business? The movie doesn’t say.

Alex Hyde-White, today

After Pretty Woman, Alex Hyde-White went on to appear not in one, but three Steven Spielberg films: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Catch Me If You Can, and The Adventures of Tintin. He also appeared in Dexter and This Is Us.

Hank Azaria (detective)

Azaria appears just briefly at start of the film, interrogating someone while investigating a murder.

Hank Azaria, today

Don’t feel bad if you don’t recognize him. Hank Azaria is best known for his voice. For over 30 seasons, he has played the roles of Moe, Chief Wiggum, Apu, and many other characters in The Simpsons. He did, however, make an in-person appearance in Quiz Show and The Birdcage.

Elinor Donahue (Bridget)

Bridget is the kind clothing-store manager who, at the request of the hotel manager, helps Vivian find a suitable dress for dinner at an upscale restaurant. The character is played by Elinor Donahue, an experienced actress best known for her role as Betty Anderson, the eldest child in the 1950s sitcom Father Knows Best.

Elinor Donahue, today

Now 85, Elinor Donahue is enjoying a well-deserved retirement. After Pretty Woman, she appeared in Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Ellen, The Princess Diaries 2, and The Young and the Restless, which was her final role.

Amy Yasbeck (Elizabeth Stuckey)

Amy Yasbeck plays Elizabeth, who’s married to Philip, the lawyer. She only appears briefly, but her character still has plenty of time to be downright condescending toward Vivian.

Amy Yasbeck, today

Fans of the unforgettable Elizabeth have been fortunate enough to see the actor again in hits such as The Mask, in which she starred alongside Jim Carrey, and Mel Brooks’s comedy Robin Hood: Men in Tights. More recently, she appeared in the series Pretty Little Liars.

Dey Young (the condescending shop clerk)

Dey Young doesn’t waste any time embodying every snobby saleswoman on the planet. She’s horrible! Young had previously appeared in several films, including Spaceballs and The Running Man. Although she played a small role in Pretty Woman, it made a big enough impression that Young lists the film first (and in all caps!) in her Instagram bio.

Dey Young, today

In addition to appearing in The X-Files, Young has had small roles in three Star Trek franchise series. She played Hannah Bates in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Arissa in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Keyla in Star Trek: Enterprise. In addition to acting, Young is also a sculptor.
