The South London curry house where Richard Ayoade has had the same order for 20 years
Richard Ayoade shared the South London curry house where has had the same order for 20 years.
The actor and comedian, perhaps best known for The IT Crowd and Travel Man, appeared on last week’s, Wednesday October 5, episode of the Off Menu podcast. Richard shared his dream meal with hosts Ed Gamble and James Acaster, including a dish from Kennington restaurant Gandhi’s.
The 45-year-old chose to have his dream main course from his beloved curry house found on Kennington Road. Richard said: “Lamb Madras. From Gandhi’s in Kennington, Gandhi’s restaurant in Kennington. Excellent restaurant.”
Gandhi’s in Kennington is part of Richard’s dream meal
Host Ed asked: “How often do you have it at Gandhi’s?” to which Richard simply said: “As often as I can. There are times when it would be twice a week, sometimes – every thing’s excellent, I always have the exact same meal.
“Lamb Madras, pilau rice, half an onion bhaji, brinjal, bhindi bhaji, peshwari nan, three papadums with all the dips, okra – that’s my side dish, sorry to skip ahead.” Ed and James agreed “wow” and “it all goes so well together”, before Richard admitted: “Every time, I’ve had that for 20 years, 20 years that’s the same order.”
Ed later stated: “I’m going to go to Gandhi’s. I’m worried you might have blown up your spot though,” to which the guest said: “I was worried, I did weigh it before I mentioned them.”
One of Richard’s favourite restaurants, Gandhi’s was opened in 1982 in South London by Zalal Uddin who climbed up the managerial ladder at Wimpy before being inspired to have his own restaurant. They promise to serve a ‘classic Indian menu based on the most traditional recipes from India, whilst understanding the contemporary demands of finely tuned tastes of the 21st century’.
On their delivery menu, Richard’s dream dish, a lamb madras, costs £8.95. Papadums cost 80p each, onion bhaji £3.95 and peshwari nan £3.95.
Richard also mentioned his dream dessert to be ice cream from Fabulous Ice Fires. He called it “extraordinary” and the “finest ice cream you’ll ever have” and it’s also found in South London, in Dulwich. Richard even revealed they put a tub of their rum and raisin ice cream aside for him.
You can find Gandhi’s at 347 Kennington Road, London SE11 4QE.
