There’s nothing better than a festive tipple with festive food – but do you know what goes best together?
Whether you’re a pigs in blankets fiend or inhale mince pies, there’s an ideal drink to go with every Christmas treat.
Aldi and Sam Caporn, known as the ‘mistress of wine’, recommend these unusual Christmas wine pairings from Aldi to go alongside your full plate.
Pigs in Blankets
Winemaster’s Lot Burgundy Pinot Noir 2021 (£14.99, 75cl)
Sam says: ‘This Christmas staple pairs particularly well with a juicy new world Pinot Noir, as the delicious red fruit and acidity cuts through the fat of the pork and bacon to refresh the palate.’
The wine has red fruity notes.
Brussel Sprouts
Specially Selected French Cairanne 2020 (£8.79, 75cl)

A divisive food item, for those who love it, a medium-bodied wine won’t clash with the flavours so is best for pairing.
Sam says: ‘The rich dark red fruit aromas are complemented by hints of cinnamon spice on the palate, resulting in a delicious wine that will really elevate the flavour of the sprouts.
‘What’s more, this lovely red also goes perfectly with other trimmings on the plate.’
Turkey and Stuffing Sandwich
Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut (£14.99, 75cl)

Yesterday’s leftovers don’t need to be a sorry affair.
Sam says: ‘Pair with a complex and elegant fizz, such as Aldi’s Veuve Monsigny.
‘The lively acidity cuts through any dryness whilst the nutty aromas and flavours of Champagne go especially well with bread.’
Mince Pies
Specially Selected Cream Sherry (£5.49, 37.5cl)

A great match with the moreish mince pie is a cream sherry, according to Sam.
‘Smooth and full, Aldi’s Sweet Cream Sherry is enriched with rich, nutty notes and tangy dried fruit aromas, which are the perfect accompaniment to the fruity flavours of a mince pie.’
Yule Log
40-Year-Old Tawny Port (£39.99, 75cl)

For a rich and decadent dessert, a rich and decadent drink is needed.
Sam says: ‘The characterful port is rich in powerful and complex nutty aromas; the sweet roasted coffee and chocolate-coated raisins are lovely partners for the rich Belgian chocolate.’
