Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve

Caumsett State Park is a 1,520-acre state park listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The park is loved by outdoor enthusiasts as it offers miles and miles of bridle paths, walking and hiking paths, biking trails, cross-country skiing, and nature trails over acres of meadows, rocky shoreline, and salt marsh. Visitors can also fish and scuba dive, although a permit is needed.
Several bird species listed as endangered, threatened, or of particular concern live within the park’s vicinity. Some of these include piping plover (state endangered and federal threatened), common tern (state threatened), and least tern (state threatened).

Then, Walt Whitman Birthplace Association was established to preserve his birthplace. Visitors can get guided tours on the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1957, and the Interpretive Center. At the Interpretive Center, visitors can see Whitman’s many portraits, letters, and manuscripts and his writing desk as a young teacher.

The Whaling Museum & Education Center aims to educate its visitors on the relationship between humans and whales. This is due to Long Island’s history of whaling as a commercial industry. The museum displays more than 6,000 artifacts from documents and photos. Some of the museum’s collections include the Richmond Collection, documents, letters, receipts, shipping lists, and manuscripts preserved from the ship Richmond that wrecked on the Bering Straits in 1849, and Big Boned, a permanent display of a full-size whale skeleton.

Heckscher Park
Heckscher Park is considered to be the “Central Park” of Huntington.
